Sports Park and Recreation Center Wins the California Parks & Recreation Society Award of Excellence

The California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) is the statewide professional organization for parks and recreation professionals. At its annual awards ceremony held on March 11, 2016, CPRS recognized the Sports Park and Recreation Center with the 2015 Park Planning Award. The award recognizes excellence in design of public park facilities including high standards in the areas of planning, design, community involvement, operation and maintenance, quality of aesthetics, usability, accessibility and versatility.

This is the fourth design award the facility has won. Other design awards include: "Parks and Recreation Project of the Year" (American Public Works Association); "Engineering Project Achievement Award" (Orange County Engineering Council); and, "Parks and Recreation Project of the Year" (American Society of Civil Engineers, Los Angeles Section).

"After a long journey to transform 86 acres of land into one of the largest recreations sports park in Orange County, visited by nearly 200,000 people in the past year, receiving this award is the frosting on the cake," Scott Wasserman, Director of Community Services.

The California Parks & Recreation Society mission is to advance the park and recreation profession through education, networking, resources and advocacy. CPRS is the source of resources, tools, advocacy and events that strengthen California's public parks and recreation industry and our professionals. CPRS unites members and creates networks across disciplines and agency boundaries to achieve together what we cannot do alone.

Lake Forest Sports Park Awarded Parks & Recreation Project of the Year Award
Recognizing outstanding projects each year throughout Orange County, the Orange County Branch of American Society of Civil Engineers awarded the City with the “Parks & Recreation Project of the Year Award” for the Lake Forest Sports Park on February 18, 2015.

BigBelly Solar Compactors and Recycling Units

Four eco-friendly BigBelly solar compactors and recycling units are placed near several fields. The bins divide trash from recycling creating two separate streams for ease of collection. Once the bins reach their threshold level, sensors initiate a compaction to create more space holding five times the average amount compared to a normal waste receptacle. When the bins are filled, a wireless signal triggers pick-up. These bins will reduce overflow of trash and decrease the number of collections to promote a cleaner a more enjoyable environment.

Cool Digs!

Over 150 fossils were unearthed from the Sports Park site during the grading period. Findings consisted of mostly teeth, vertebrae, skulls, ribs, flippers, and other parts from marine mammals. Once the fossils are identified, the collection will be housed at the Cooper Center in Fullerton and will be available for future research.

2023 Community Services Commission

Notice

The City of Lake Forest is accepting applications to serve on the Community Services Commission. Applications must be submitted online using this form and must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

The Community Services Commission advises the City Council on matters pertaining to the acquisition, development, and maintenance of public parks and recreational facilities. The Commission also advises the City Council on matters relating to recreational programs and provides advice to the Community Services Department.

This Commission meets the Wednesday after the first City Council meeting of each month, at 6:30 p.m. Commission members pledge upon appointment to represent the overall public good and not that of an exclusive group or interest and will sign an Ethics Policy upon appointment to the Commission. The City assigns a staff liaison to work with the Commission and facilitate communication between the Commission and the City Council.

In addition to attending the regular monthly Commission meetings, Commissioners are expected to periodically attend and participate in City programs and activities. Commissioners receive a salary of $59 per meeting, not to exceed $118 per month.

2023 Planning Commission Application

The City's Planning Commission is a decision-making body tasked with reviewing matters related to planning and development in the City. The Planning Commission consists of five members which are appointed by the City- Council with Commissioners serving four-year terms. Typical projects reviewed by the Planning Commission include applications for new development, proposed changes in zoning or the text of the Municipal Code, as well as review proposed subdivisions of land. The Planning Commission is also responsible for making recommendations to the City Council as to whether a project or action would be consistent with the General Plan.

2023 Traffic and Parking Commission

The City of Lake Forest is accepting applications to serve on the Traffic and Parking Commission. Applications must be submitted online using this form and must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2023. There is currently one seat available on the commission.

The Traffic and Parking Commission advises the City Council on issues relating to parking and the safe and efficient movement of traffic, including vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and other modes of transportation upon the circulation network of the City. The Commission will provide recommendations related to traffic and parking including, but not limited to traffic and parking related field studies, requests for traffic control devices, requests for permit parking and street sweeping parking restrictions, and other related matters.
