Public Meeting Set for Freeway Improvements

A $580 million freeway-improvement project that started at the southern edge of Mission Viejo has reached Lake Forest.

Construction is underway on Segment 3, between Alicia Parkway and El Toro Road. The Orange County Transportation Authority and Caltrans are holding a virtual community meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10 to share information about upcoming construction activities and improvements. Registration information will be announced soon.

The project, which spans Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, and Lake Forest, is expected to be completed in 2025. OCTA and Caltrans are working together to improve freeway capacity and operations on the 6.5-mile stretch from the 73 toll road to El Toro Road.

The voter-approved project will:

  • Add a general-purpose lane in each direction of the I-5 between Avery Parkway and Alicia Parkway.
  • Extend the second carpool lane from Alicia Parkway to El Toro Road in both directions. The carpool lanes will also be converted to continuous access.
  • Reconstruction the Avery Parkway and La Paz Road interchanges.
  • Widen the Los Alisos bridge.
