The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 12 and the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) are working to improve Interstate 5 through the ongoing striping project and also through widening the I-5 between Interstate 405 and State Route 55.
Although the striping project should be finished by the end of the summer, the widening project is in the environmental phase. The project will add general purpose lanes in each direction on the I-5 and extend the second High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane. Transportation officials say that will increase capacity and operations, extend the HOV network and improve merging/diverging from freeway ramps. The design phase of the project is expected to begin in July 2022 with construction to begin in February 2026.
